Cain turned away from Wisdom and without her protection he became a slave to the passions of the lower self. Since we have no record in the legend that Cain repented from his ways it is self-evident that his mind-set persisted and we know that such a state of existence gnaws away at a person’s soul to eventually cause stunted growth and damage to the spirit.  Cain perished, not his body as all bodies perish B Cain perished .
