Yesu teaches that culturally conditioned thinking is not free will.  Following the Way must be done in free will. Culturally conditioned thinking is often the source of social justification for evil.  the suppression of women, for instance, is one of the many areas which Yesu challenged.  The word hate as used here and in Luke is softened by Matthew.  It tells us that we must be able to discriminate, reevaluate, and if neccesary cut ourselves off from incorrect cultural ways. We must be greater than the cultural conditioning imposed on us, we must prove all things and keep to the good. We fail as humans if we do not rise above cultural conditioning. We must be good because we will it to be so, not by accident; and we must see our thoughts and actions for what they truly are and not be complacent that the 'way of the people' is the proper Way.
